Camera, then framing

Start with a functioning phone or webcam that your chosen platform supports. Position it solidly at an intentional height. Prioritize a clean image, believable eye line, and a stable frame over expensive specifications. Review your shot with the exact background you plan to use.

Light is often more important than gear

Use a diffuse light in front of you, slightly to one side. Avoid bright windows behind you and mixed lighting that makes skin tones change unpredictably. A lamp bounced off a light wall may be sufficient for a first test. Keep lighting fixtures stable and cool enough to operate safely.

Make speech intelligible

Test the microphone in the actual room while the fan, air conditioner, and computer are running. Headphones can reduce echo. If the platform has built-in audio monitoring, use it before publishing. Do not broadcast background conversations without consent.

Test the upload, not just the download

Stable upload speed matters. Prefer wired networking when practical, stop large background downloads, and select a stream resolution the connection can maintain. Platform recommendations and actual performance vary by device, codec, and region.

The no-drama dry run

1. Position.Sit or stand where you'll actually perform and inspect the entire frame.
2. Record a short local test.Check camera, sound, exposure, and lighting. Do not mistake a local recording for a platform-private broadcast feature.
3. Check privacy settings.Review chat defaults, who can view your profile, and any geographic controls.
